Codex AI Book Writer vs Writing It Yourself in Word or Scrivener
Published 31 October 2026. 3 min read.
The traditional way to write a book is still a good one: open Word or Scrivener and write it yourself. This page compares that with drafting the book in Codex AI Book Writer, and shows how the two work together.
Side by side
| Codex AI Book Writer | Writing it yourself in Word or Scrivener | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Describe the idea in two sentences and get a chapter outline in seconds. | A blank page. You build the structure yourself. |
| The first draft | Every chapter written from your approved outline, usually in a few minutes. | Weeks or months, depending on length and how much time you have. |
| Your voice | A solid draft that needs your examples, experience and edits. | Yours from the first word. |
| Facts | Need checking: AI can state wrong things confidently. | As accurate as your own research. |
| Finished files | PDF, Word (DOCX), EPUB and a web page (HTML) from the same book. | Word saves DOCX and PDF; Scrivener compiles to e-book and print formats. |
| Cost | 10,000 free tokens, then packs from $5.99. A 20,000-word guide is about 26,000 tokens, one $14.99 pack. | The software you already have, plus your time. |
| Amazon KDP | Must be disclosed as AI-generated. | Nothing to disclose if you wrote it without AI. |
Use both
For many non-fiction books the fastest route is a mix. Let Codex AI Book Writer build the outline and the first draft, export it as Word (DOCX), and do the real writing in the tool you know: Word opens the file directly, and Scrivener can import it. The AI saves you the blank page and the structure; the editing and the voice stay yours.
When writing it yourself is the better choice
- Memoir, personal essays and fiction built on your own life: the AI does not know your stories.
- Books where your name rests on original research.
- When you do not want to disclose AI use when you publish.
Publishing on Amazon KDP
Amazon asks whether AI generated any of the text, images or translations. A book drafted in Codex AI Book Writer counts as AI-generated even after you rework it in Word. A book you wrote yourself and only polished with AI counts as AI-assisted, which you do not have to declare. The details are in Publishing an AI-Written Book on Amazon KDP.
