Publishing an AI-Written Book on Amazon KDP: What You Have to Disclose

Two books side by side: the AI-generated one is ticked for disclosure, the AI-assisted one is not.

You can publish a book written with AI on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, but you have to tell Amazon about it. The rules hinge on one distinction: whether your content is AI-generated or AI-assisted.

This article summarises Amazon's published guidelines as of October 2026. Policies change, so always check KDP's content guidelines before you publish. This is not legal advice.

AI-generated vs. AI-assisted

AI-generated means text, images or translations created by an AI-based tool. According to KDP's guidelines, content stays AI-generated even if you edit it substantially afterwards.

AI-assisted means you created the content yourself and used AI to improve it: editing, refining, error-checking, or brainstorming ideas before you wrote it.

KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated content. It does not require you to disclose AI-assisted content.

What this means for a book drafted with an AI book writer

If an AI tool such as Codex AI Book Writer wrote the chapters, that text is AI-generated, even after you have edited it. Answer yes to the AI question when you publish.

The same applies to AI-generated cover art and to AI translations of your own book.

If you wrote the book yourself and only used AI to check grammar or suggest improvements, that counts as AI-assisted.

Where you disclose it

When you publish or republish a title, the content section of the KDP setup asks whether you used AI tools to create the text, images or translations in your book. The Bookseller reported the question when the requirement was introduced in 2023. Answer it honestly for each part.

The daily title limit

In 2023 KDP also capped new titles at three per day per account, and told the Authors Guild the limit may be adjusted. Mass-producing books is not a strategy KDP supports.

You are still responsible for the content

Disclosure doesn't shift responsibility. KDP's guidelines say you must make sure AI-generated and AI-assisted content follows all of its content guidelines, including intellectual property rights. In practice:

A good workflow for AI-assisted publishing

  1. Write a specific brief and fix the outline before generating.
  2. Generate the draft, then edit it properly: facts first, then structure, then voice.
  3. Add your own examples and experience.
  4. Export to EPUB for Kindle and PDF for print.
  5. Disclose the AI-generated parts honestly in KDP.

Codex AI Book Writer covers steps 1 to 4: an outline you control, a full draft in minutes, chapter-by-chapter editing with saved versions, and export to PDF, DOCX, EPUB and HTML. New accounts get 10,000 free tokens with no credit card. Try it with your own idea.
